Abstract:

Emotional competence is clearly an ethical imperative in psychology (Simionato et al., 2019; Wise et al., 2012). However, it is a relatively new topic within supervision and mentorship settings (Falender & Shafranske, 2021). Clinical sport psychology (CSP) and mental performance consulting (MPC) trainees deal with stressors within mental health and performance psychology settings that could pose threats to professional well-being. These factors are further complicated by ethical challenges existing within the sport ecosystem (e.g., non-traditional work settings, multiple relationships). Decision-makers within the clinical and sport psychology fields have outlined and focused on the importance of competency-based training. However, current standards within sport psychology do not directly address emotional competence, despite this being addressed in multiple ethics codes that those within sport psychology are called to uphold. Given these factors, it is important that supervisors and mentors understand how to help trainees navigate these complexities while also attending to their own well-being. Yet, there is little guidance how to best accomplish this with trainees.

In this webinar, participants will learn about the research examining well-being of trainees in CSP and MPC. The presenters will also discuss emotional competence, ethical and sport ecosystem factors for supervisors/mentors to consider, and a supervision/mentorship model grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) as a framework for building emotional competence with CSP & MPC trainees. Attendees will leave this course understanding the ethical imperative that those in the fields of CSP & MPC attend to their well-being and have actionable steps you can use when working with trainees.

Objectives:

  1. Describe research examining well-being of trainees in clinical sport psychology (CSP) and mental performance consulting (MPC)
  2. Describe aspects of emotional competence and list relevant Ethical Standards pertaining to this concept
  3. Discuss factors within the sport ecosystem that may pose threats to emotional competence and ethical practice
  4. Identify strategies to build trainee emotional competence using a supervision/mentorship model grounded in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
