Abstract:

Ethics codes in psychology, counseling, and social work all specifically address professional well-being within their standards. Several researchers have written about the importance of professional well-being, and some go on to state that it is an ethical imperative. At the same time, there is research suggesting mental health professionals are not good at recognizing their own distress. This is further complicated by approaches to the well-being of mental health professionals being reactive rather than proactive. This intermediate level workshop will focus on ethical foundations for promoting psychological flexibility, which has been shown in a number of studies to promote personal and professional well-being. The presenter will discuss strategies, such as defusion, values, and committed action and help you apply the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model to growing your emotional competence. Join us for an engaged learning experience designed to help you expand your emotional competence, strengthen your ethical toolkit, and walk away with a plan for committed action you can use to promote your own professional well-being as it relates to ethical decision making.

Objectives:

  1. List 2 ethical codes/principles related to well-being that can be addressed through the use of the ACT model.
  2. Discuss the perspectives through which the Ethics Codes were written.
  3. Summarize how the ACT model can address issues of professional well-being.
  4. Develop a committed action plan to address your emotional competence based upon identified professional values.
