Abstract:
This is an intermediate level seminar that explores variables related to psychological aspects of sport injury, rehabilitation, and return to play. An integrated model of psychological response to sport injury and stages of injury rehabilitation is discussed. Attendees learn about common emotions, cognitions, and behaviors throughout injury rehabilitation and return to play as well as how these interact with athlete-specific variables. Cultural differences as they relate to the rehabilitation of the sport injury process is discussed. Attendees learn tools to use throughout rehabilitation as well as ways to assess an athlete's psychological readiness to return to play after sport injury. This seminar is appropriate for athletic trainers, physical therapists, sports medicine physicians, psychologists, social workers, counselors, and mental performance consultants working with injured athletes.
Objectives:
- Identify components of an integrated model of psychological response to sport injury.
- List the stages of injury rehabilitation.
- Explain common emotions, cognitions, behaviors, and personal athlete variables that interact with the injury rehabilitation process.
- Identify two (2) ways to assess an athlete's psychological readiness to return to play after sport injury.
