Abstract:
This is an essential level webinar that will explore variables related to mental health concerns for adolescent student-athletes. There are a variety of developmental, contextual, relational (coaches & guardians), and sport-related factors that impact adolescent mental health and well-being (Beaupre et al., 2021; Bissett et al., 2020; Kuska et al., 2022; Walton et al., 2024). Sports medicine personnel, including athletic trainers, may be the first point of contact for these concerns (Neal et al., 2015), but research suggests they are often dissatisfied with mental health training they receive (Ostrowski et al., 2023). Many mental health professionals have little training regarding working with student-athletes and how to engage in effective collaboration with sports medicine teams (Walsh et al., 2023). Therefore, sports medicine and mental health professionals would benefit from education about adolescent student-athletes' mental health difficulties and effective practices for interprofessional collaboration. This webinar is appropriate for athletic trainers, physical therapists, mental performance consultants, and mental health professionals working with adolescent student-athletes.

- Describe risk factors for mental health concerns in adolescent student-athletes
- Describe protective factors for mental health concerns in adolescent student-athletes
- Apply knowledge to empower professionals when navigating mental health concerns with adolescent student-athletes

Presenter: Erin Haugen, PhD, LP, CMPC
Dr. Haugen is a licensed psychologist and consultant specializing in clinical & sport psychology. She has a PhD in clinical psychology and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant ® (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.
Dr. Haugen is a nationally sought-after speaker in athletic training and sport psychology. She presents regularly at the annual meetings of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), American Psychological Association (APA), and the invitation-only Big Sky Sport Psychology Conference. She presents nationally about athlete mental health, interdisciplinary care, ethics, and performance psychology. She authors articles and book chapters related to athlete mental health, sport psychology, ethics, and supervision.
Dr. Haugen is the Founder & CEO of Haugen Performance Consulting, PLLC. She is the Director of Mental Health and Performance Psychology at a Division I institution and consults with several other institutions at various levels of the NCAA and NAIA. She received the prestigious NATA Jack Weakley Award of Distinction in 2023 for her lifetime contributions to athletics, athletic training, and sports medicine.
