Abstract:
This is an intermediate level webinar that explores variables related to mental health concerns for collegiate student-athletes. The pressure of high performance and unique stressors in the sport environment can impact the mental health and well-being of collegiate student-athletes. However, a number of collegiate student-athletes do not seek mental health treatment. Athletic trainers are often the first point of contact for these concerns but feel ill-equipped to manage mental health concerns. Many mental health professionals have little training regarding effective collaboration with sports medicine and providing effective mental health treatment to collegiate student-athletes. Moreover, mental health and sports medicine professionals are often tasked with making sport participation decisions with little guidance as to how to effectively determine whether it is safe from a mental health perspective to participate in sport. This webinar focuses on unique presentations of mental health concerns in collegiate student-athletes and important sport-related and multicultural factors to consider. Using a fictional case presentation, the presenter will guide participants through a framework that they can use during decision-making about sport participation when mental health concerns are present.
Objectives:
- Describe elements of mental health concerns as they present in collegiate student-athletes
- Explain sport-related variables that complicate mental health and well-being for collegiate student-athletes
- Use guidelines and frameworks to make sport participation decisions for collegiate student-athletes
