Abstract:
Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses with numerous negative consequences, including the potential for death, and these concerns can escalate rapidly in the fast-paced sport environment. A relatively high number of collegiate student-athletes are along the disordered eating spectrum (Flatt et al., 2021; Karrer et al., 2020; Torres-McGehee et al., 2023). However, research suggests that athletic trainers and licensed mental health professionals (LMHPs) who do not specialize in eating disorders have difficulty accurately identifying factors that signal potential eating disorder concerns (Kroshus et al., 2018; MacCaughelty, 2023; Worsfold & Sheffield, 2018). This is an essential/entry level webinar designed to help sports medicine and mental health professionals understand important factors related to the eating disorder spectrum for collegiate student-athletes so they can effectively identify potential eating disorder concerns for further evaluation and potential treatment. Participants will leave with an enhanced knowledge base and tools they can use within their clinical practice.
Objectives:
- Recognize risk factors for eating disorders in collegiate student-athletes
- Identify components of the Female Athlete Triad and Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) and how this relates to eating disorder risk
- Implement symptom assessment congruent with best practice mental health guidelines
- Illustrate your role in the referral process and interprofessional management of eating disorders
