Abstract:

This course is designed to address the unique challenges faced by first responders and medical professionals who dedicate their lives to serving others in high-stakes and demanding environments. This course goes beyond conventional self-care by providing practical strategies to recognize, mitigate, and recover from compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma, and burnout. Factors at the personal, professional, and organizational levels will be examined. The psychological and physiological impact of prolonged exposure to trauma and high stress will also be explored and discussed. Participants will leave with the knowledge and tools necessary to enhance resilience, maintain well-being, and thrive in demanding roles.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the differences and similarities between compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma, and burnout.
  2. Explain the psychological and physiological impact of trauma and stress.
  3. Identify strategies that can be used to build resilience and treat the effects of work-related trauma and stress.
