Abstract:
This is an advanced level seminar analyzing variables related to establishing policies, procedures, and action plans to address mental health concerns for athletes. NCAA Best Practices indicate that procedures should be developed to address a variety of mental health concerns that include but not limited to mental health emergencies, transition plans, and routine mental health referrals. However, available data indicates a number of organizations do not have thorough procedures in place and many could benefit from guidance regarding what to include in these procedures. Therefore, this course is designed to assist sports medicine and mental health professionals in creating thorough guidance to respond to a variety of mental health concerns. Throughout the course, prompts will be given to help attendees reflect on how to draft or revise their own policies, procedures, & action plans. This workshop is appropriate for athletic trainers and licensed mental health professionals (psychologists, social workers, counselors) involved in establishing, revising, and reviewing mental health policies, procedures, and action plans.
Objectives:
- Define general policy principles to consider when writing your policies, procedures, and mental health emergency action plans (MHEAPs) for each disorder.
- Explain and compose components of a mental health emergency action plan (MHEAP).
- Distinguish situations that qualify as a mental health emergency, routine mental health referral, or transition planning.

Presenter: Erin Haugen, PhD, LP, CMPC
Dr. Haugen is an author, psychologist, and consultant specializing in clinical & sport psychology. She has a PhD in clinical psychology and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant ® (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.
Dr. Haugen is a nationally sought-after speaker in athletic training and sport psychology. She presents regularly at the annual meetings of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), American Psychological Association (APA), and the invitation-only Big Sky Sport Psychology Conference. Dr. Haugen was also awarded the prestigious Jack Weakley Award of Distinction in 2023 for her lifetime contributions to athletics, athletic training, and sports medicine.
Dr. Haugen works with elite athletes (collegiate, Olympic, professional) from over 20 different sports and specializes in working with athletic departments, student-athletes, coaches, sports medicine professionals, and staff at the collegiate level (NCAA Division I, II, & III; NAIA; NJCAA). She has been responsible for policy and procedure development & revision for a variety of organizations.
Dr. Haugen is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the University of North Dakota where she is responsible for providing training to PhD students in psychological assessment and sport psychology. She is a former faculty member (2016-2020) at Altru Family Medicine Residency. She continues to provide mental health and performance psychology training to sports medicine fellows (family medicine & physical therapy), athletic training students, and licensed mental health professionals working with athletes. She is a former member (2017-2019) and past-president (2018-2019) of the North Dakota State Board of Psychologist Examiners (NDSBPE).
