Abstract:
This is an advanced level seminar addressing variables related to establishing and refining mental health screening procedures in athlete populations. NCAA Best Practices indicate that mental health screening procedures should be developed to identify and refer athletes experiencing mental health concerns. Available data suggests sports medicine staff are often responsible for conducting mental health screenings. However, athletic and sports medicine departments differ greatly regarding resources to conduct these mental health screenings. Professionals may also benefit from learning mental health screening approaches that are consistent with their available resources. Therefore, this course is designed to assist those responsible for athlete mental health screening with establishing and/or refining their screening procedures. This workshop is appropriate for athletic trainers and licensed mental health professionals (psychologists, social workers, counselors) involved in establishing, revising, and reviewing mental health policies, procedures, and action plans.
Objectives:
- List the NCAA Best Practice recommendations for athlete mental health screening.
- Explain 7 factors to consider during the athlete mental health screening process.
- Determine which approach to mental health screening is most appropriate for your organization.

Presenter: Erin Haugen, PhD, LP, CMPC
Dr. Haugen is an author, psychologist, and consultant specializing in clinical & sport psychology. She has a PhD in clinical psychology and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant ® (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.
Dr. Haugen is a nationally sought-after speaker in athletic training and sport psychology. She presents regularly at the annual meetings of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP), American Psychological Association (APA), and the invitation-only Big Sky Sport Psychology Conference. Dr. Haugen was also awarded the prestigious Jack Weakley Award of Distinction in 2023 for her lifetime contributions to athletics, athletic training, and sports medicine.
Dr. Haugen works with elite athletes (collegiate, Olympic, professional) from over 20 different sports and specializes in working with athletic departments, student-athletes, coaches, sports medicine professionals, and staff at the collegiate level (NCAA Division I, II, & III; NAIA; NJCAA). She has been responsible for policy and procedure development & revision for a variety of organizations.
Dr. Haugen is an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the University of North Dakota where she trains PhD candidates in psychological assessment and sport psychology. She is a former faculty member (2016-2020) at Altru Family Medicine Residency. She provides mental health and performance psychology training to sports medicine fellows (family medicine & physical therapy), athletic training students, and licensed mental health professionals working with athletes. She is a former member (2017-2019) and past-president (2018-2019) of the North Dakota State Board of Psychologist Examiners (NDSBPE).
