Abstract:

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy with strong evidence indicating that it significantly improves relationship satisfaction and reduces conflict for couples (Beasley & Ager, 2019). At the same time, there are numerous nuances to learn when practicing effective EFT with couples. Several EFT trainers have said that Tango Move 1 is the most difficult move of the Tango, and the presenter posits that it is also the most important of the 5 moves. Tango Move 1 lays the foundation for each Tango by clarifying exactly what is happening in the session and then focusing on the specific attachment / emotional issue on which to direct attention. Without a solid Tango Move 1, the therapist & couple can be stuck in confusion with little hope of finding targets that are meaningful to deepen, enact, & process. In short, without a solid Tango Move 1, there is no successful Tango. Because the key to effective couples therapy is knowing what to focus on and how to proceed with that information, attendees will leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to approach Tango Move 1 for an effective EFT Tango. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training programs.

Objectives*:

  1. List the 5 goals of Tango Move 1
  2. Describe the value of the word "how" in moving from content to process
