Abstract:

Sleep problems are pervasive in the United States, and sleep is impacted by a variety of biopsychosocial factors. Approximately 70% of adults report obtaining insufficient sleep at least one night a month, and 11% endorse insufficient sleep every night (CDC, 2008). These factors are complicated further by technology, varying work schedules, and more. Despite the high level of sleep problems and disorders, many of these concerns go unrecognized and untreated. A variety of healthcare professionals (e.g., licensed mental health professionals, athletic trainers) are in ideal positions to recognize symptoms of sleep disorders. However, sleep education is not often a standard component of healthcare training programs. Participants in this course will learn signs and symptoms of common sleep disorders and be introduced to screening tools they can use in their practice. They will also learn the basic tenets of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), which is a highly effective treatment for insomnia.

Objectives:

  1. Identify signs, symptoms, and biopsychosocial factors negatively impacting quality sleep.
  2. Discuss and access tools available for screening clients for sleep disorders.
  3. Explain the basic tenets of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I).
  4. Describe when to refer patients to sleep specialists.
