Abstract:
Climate change is a public health issue, and research suggests many public health directors do not believe they have adequate resources to address impacts on their residents (Krueger et al., 2015). Natural disasters (flooding, tornadoes, etc.) have a unique impact on the mental health of individuals experiencing these disasters that are often complicated by systemic challenges. The impacts of natural disasters vary for individuals across the lifespan and have strong implications for minoritized and vulnerable populations. As licensed mental health professionals, it is likely that you will work with individuals experiencing mental health concerns related to or exacerbated by natural disasters. Therefore, it is important to have knowledge about potential impacts and tools to help the mental health and well-being of those you serve. This introductory webinar will discuss ways in which a wide range of individuals are impacted by natural disasters. The presenter will also introduce the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model as a tool to address these concerns. Subsequent webinars in this series will discuss the ACT model in more detail.
Objectives:
- Explain the mental health impacts of natural disasters across the lifespan.
- Outline unique ways in which minoritized and vulnerable groups are impacted by natural disasters.
- Summarize the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model and its application to individuals experiencing effects of natural disasters.
