Abstract:

Shame is an emotion that commonly presents within the course of therapy, although many clinicians are unsure how to best guide their clients through this challenging experience. This webinar will explore the value of shame as an innate and healthy affect and how it can become a chronic emotion which leads people to define themselves as being “flawed and unlovable”. Although abuse and neglect create chronic shame, benign caregiver misattunement during the early childhood development is a more common genesis. Given that the roots of shame are planted during the visceral / preverbal phase of development, healing shame requires accessing emotions, which are stored in the body, rather than cognitively explaining shame away. Practicing self compassion, accepting vulnerability, and having corrective-emotional-experiences are crucial to healing shame. Attendees will learn how the overall approach and interventions within Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) are ideally suited for working with shame, as they address these crucial components.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the healthy and socially protective value of shame
  2. Define "caregiver misattunement" and describe how this leads to chronic shame
  3. List and describe the four poles of Nathanson's Compass of Shame
  4. Explain why self-compassion is a key component to shame resilience
  5. Define "corrective emotional experience" as practiced in EFT
  6. Define RISSSSC and explain why it is an integral part of EFT and treating shame
