Abstract:
If you took our popular Psychology of Sport Injury course, you'll love this version updated with new research and clinical insights! This is an intermediate level webinar exploring variables related to psychological aspects of sport injury, rehabilitation, and return to sport. Research clearly demonstrates that psychological variables play an important role in the injury, rehabilitation, and return to sport process for athletes across ages (Chow et al., 2026), competitive levels (Garcia-Rubio et al., 2026; Lyon-Monk et al., 2025), and type of injury (Chen et al., 2022; Salamh et al., 2025; Velasquez Garcia et al., 2023). The presenter discusses various psychology of sport injury models (e.g., Wadey et al., 2018; Weise-Bjornstal et al., 1998, 2015) and how to apply concepts to your work with athletes experiencing sport injury. The presenter will discuss stages of injury rehabilitation and common emotions, cognitions, and behaviors that tend to emerge throughout injury the injury rehabilitation and return to sport process (Baez et al., 2020; Sheean et al., 2023). Attendees learn tools to use throughout rehabilitation as well as ways to assess an athlete's psychological readiness to return to play after sport injury, as psychological readiness for return to sport is an important yet often misunderstood concept (Podlog et al., 2024; Podlog & Ivarsson, 2025; Tranaeus et al., 2024). This webinar is intended to empower professionals to be more equipped to identify, respond, and assist with psychological aspects of sport injuries (Annear et al., 2019). This webinar is appropriate for sports medicine, mental health, and mental performance professionals who are working with athletes experiencing sport injury at any competitive level.
Objectives:
- Recall elements of various models used to characterize the psychological response to sport injury
- Select common emotions, cognitions, and behaviors that may emerge for athletes experiencing sport injury
- Identify stages of injury recovery and psychological strategies you can use during each stage when working with athletes experiencing sport injury
- Identify two (2) ways to assess an athlete's psychological readiness for return to sport after injury
