Abstract:

Providing consulting and/or clinical services through virtual means involves numerous ethical considerations. Although one important consideration is informed consent (APA Task Force on Telepsychology, 2024), this is an infrequently discussed topic, especially within applied sport psychology. Many professionals consider informed consent as primarily a legal requirement. However, the presenter will discuss ways in which dynamic and empowered informed consent (Feddersen, 2024) can be an important relationship-building tool that enhances services provided to clients. The presenter will discuss ethical standards and guidelines within mental health and applied sport psychology disciplines as it relates to virtual services and specifically informed consent. Because there is little guidance for in the applied sport psychology literature, this webinar will draw upon the clinical literature and discuss application within applied sport psychology settings. Attendees will leave this webinar with a greater understanding of how to use informed consent as a cornerstone of ethical and effective practice (Knapp & Fingerhut, 2024; Pope et al., 2021). Attendees will also reflect on ways to improve informed consent practices. This intermediate level webinar is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals (psychology, counseling, social work, marriage and family therapy) and applied sport psychology professionals (e.g., CMPCs) who provide virtual services to clients. Although this webinar will be focused on the applied sport psychology setting, professionals outside of this setting will also benefit from the content of this webinar.

Objectives:

  1. Describe informed consent and its application to telehealth services in applied sport psychology
  2. List ethics codes that apply to informed consent in applied sport psychology based upon your unique role
  3. Explain what to include in an informed consent document for telehealth services in applied sport psychology
  4. Assess your informed consent process and identify improvements you can make for telehealth services
