Abstract:

It is estimated that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) occurs in 7-15% of the population worldwide (Wolraich, et al., 2019). ADHD is categorized as a neurodevelopmental disorder for which there is no “cure,” and symptoms can impact individuals throughout their lifespans. To date, research has focused primarily on childhood ADHD, while there is limited research on the diagnosis and treatment of adults with ADHD (Varrasi et al., 2023). This introductory webinar will review current research regarding diagnosis of ADHD in adults, impacts of ADHD on adult academic and work functioning, and potential interventions / approaches to reduce the impact of ADHD symptoms on academic and work functioning. This webinar is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals. Trainees in graduate mental health programs are also encouraged to attend.

Objectives:

  1. List ADHD diagnosis criteria and discuss at least two considerations in diagnosis in adults with ADHD
  2. Describe at least two potential areas of functional impairment in academic and work settings for adults with ADHD
  3. Identify at least two interventions/approaches to use with clients to reduce the impact of ADHD on adult academic and work functioning
