Abstract:

Ethical thinking and decision-making are the foundation for competent practice in sport psychology (Quartiroli et al., 2023). The field of sport psychology is filled with potential ethical dilemmas and even trained sport psychology practitioners can have difficulty recognizing when they are encountering an ethically challenging situation (Watson et al., 2020). As mentors and supervisors, we have a responsibility to help trainees develop ethical decision-making skills, which includes learning to attend to the "gut feeling" something is amiss (Haugen et al., 2025). This is particularly important as we consider self-care and emotional competence within sport psychology spaces (Haugen & Hoff, 2024). Unfortunately, there is little guidance regarding how to best do this within mentorship and supervision sessions (O'Donoghue & O'Donoghue, 2019). This webinar reviews current literature regarding how to develop ethical decision-making skills within the mentorship/supervisory relationship and offers ideas as to how to build these skills with trainees. Specific attention is given to resource accumulation skills (Haugen et al., 2025) and an ethical decision-making model centered in positive psychology (Knapp & Fingerhut, 2024). The presenter also uses a variety of experiential exercises to help mentors/supervisors recognize their own growth areas. Participants leave this webinar with tools they can use to build and enhance their skills as mentors and supervisors so their trainees can have the skills they need to practice ethically within sport psychology.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the role of the mentor/supervisor in helping trainees develop ethical decision-making skills
  2. Assess your own areas of strength and improvement as a mentor/supervisor using experiential learning strategies
  3. Explain how to use resource accumulation as a risk management strategy with mentees/supervisees
  4. Discuss how to help mentees/supervisees use an ethical decision-making model grounded in positive psychology
