Abstract:
This is an updated version of our Mental Health Emergency Action Plan (MHEAP) Essentials course. This is an intermediate-level webinar analyzing variables related to establishing policies, procedures, and action plans to address mental health concerns for athletes. Various guidelines and Best Practices indicate that procedures should be developed to address a variety of mental health concerns that include but are not limited to mental health emergencies. However, available data indicates that many organizations do not have thorough procedures in place (Jang et al., 2024; Young et al., 2023) and many could benefit from guidance regarding what to include in these procedures. Therefore, this course is designed to assist sports medicine and mental health professionals in creating thorough guidance to respond to a variety of mental health emergencies. The presenter offers factors to consider for not only the MHEAP but also policies and procedures related to mental health. This webinar is appropriate for athletic trainers, licensed mental health professionals (psychologists, social workers, counselors), and mental performance consultants involved in establishing, revising, and reviewing mental health policies, procedures, and action plans and will be beneficial for any stage of conceptualization, writing, or re-writing of these plans.
Objectives:
- Identify trends in the research regarding use of MHEAPs
- Identify general policy principles to consider when writing your overall mental health plan, policies, procedures, and mental health emergency action plans (MHEAPs)
- Recall guidelines and best practices to reference when writing your Mental Health Plan
- Select components to include when writing your policies, procedures, and mental health emergency action plans (MHEAPs)
