Abstract:

Youth MHFA is a skills-based training that teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to youth and young adults experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge. The evidence behind the program demonstrates it builds mental health literacy, providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental health or substance use challenge. This course is open to athletic trainers, athletic training students, and other healthcare professionals interested in learning to identify, respond, and refer athletes experiencing a mental health or substance use concerns to appropriate professionals. This course will help you build skills using lecture, small group work, large group work, responding to scenarios, and video-based learning while helping you stay within your identified scope of practice. We will also discuss integrating concepts into your MHEAPs and application of these concepts into sport settings.

Objectives:

  1. Define the purpose of Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) and the role of the First Aider.
  2. Illustrate the signs & symptoms of mental health challenges that may impact youth.
  3. Explain the impact of traumatic experiences and the role of resilience on adolescent development.
  4. Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to non-crisis situations.
  5. Apply the appropriate steps of the YMHFA Action Plan (ALGEE) to crisis situations.
  6. Choose appropriate methods for self-care following the application of YMHFA in a crisis or non-crisis situation.

Instructor: Erin Haugen, PhD, LP, CMPC

Dr. Haugen is a licensed psychologist and consultant specializing in clinical & sport psychology. She has a PhD in clinical psychology and is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant® (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Dr. Haugen is a nationally sought-after speaker in athletic training and sport psychology and presents nationally about athlete mental health, interdisciplinary care, ethics, and performance psychology. She authors articles and book chapters related to athlete mental health, sport psychology, ethics, and supervision.

Dr. Haugen is the Founder & CEO of Haugen Performance Consulting, a firm specializing in mental health, well-being, leadership, and performance psychology training for high-stakes industries, such as healthcare, higher education, and elite sport. She is the Director of Mental Health and Performance Psychology at a Division I institution and consults with several other institutions at various levels of the NCAA and NAIA. She received the prestigious NATA Jack Weakley Award of Distinction in 2023 for her lifetime contributions to athletics, athletic training, and sports medicine.

Instructor: Angela Donn, MSW, LCSW-C


Angela has been a clinical social worker for over 20 years working with a wide range of clients from ages 12 to 75. She believes in letting your experience inform you but not limit you!

Angela works collaboratively with those she serves to help them achieve her personal and mental wellness goals. She tailors spaces for each person's needs and preferences.

Angela earned her Bachelor's degree in Humanities with a minor in Art Therapy from Buffalo State University and her Master of Social Work degree from Fordham University. She has pursued additional training in a range of areas to continue refining her skills. She has also served as a clinical supervisor for more than 15 years and is passionate about speaking at state and national conferences on mental health topics and adventure-based therapy.

Continuing Education Approvals (CE/CEU)


This course is available for 7.0 continuing education hours. You must attend at least 90% of each live courses dates AND complete the pre-work prior to the end of the live course to receive CE/CEU credit. Completion is verified and attendance is monitored. Credit will not be given for partial viewing/attendance, and the instructor-led portion is NOT recorded.
