Abstract:
This is an essential level seminar that will discuss signs & symptoms of suicide. Now, more than ever, it is important to understand how to effectively identify, address, and respond to signs & symptoms of suicide experienced by student-athletes. This course is designed to teach you important skills to do just that! Participants will be trained in QPR, and successful completion of this course results in QPR certification, which is good for 1 year. This portion of the course will teach a 3-step model (Question, Persuade, Refer) that athletic trainers can use if they suspect someone is experiencing a mental health concern. Participants will apply learned skills to various scenarios as well as discuss how components of the learned material may be integrated into their Mental Health Emergency Action Plans (MHEAPs). This course goes beyond awareness and focuses on helping you take effective action when you are concerned about someone.
Objectives:
- List signs & symptoms of suicide.
- Recall suicide factors unique to high performing populations
- Choose QPR strategies to use when someone is experiencing a mental health emergency
