Abstract:

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy with strong evidence indicating that it significantly improves relationship satisfaction and reduces conflict for couples (Beasley & Ager, 2019). At the same time, there are numerous nuances to learn when practicing effective EFT with couples. This webinar will discuss important features of successful Tango Moves 2-5 in EFT. In Tango Moves 2 through 4 we move from the curious, up-tempo, exploratory pace of Tango Move 1, into a slower pace with more intentionality. The tempo picks up again in Tango Move 5. We will also explore the the deeper themes of each Tango Move, which include intentionality, conscientiousness, and empathy. The presenter will articulate helpful phrasing that therapists can use to clearly convey the intention of each Move and the types of enactments used in EFT. Lastly, the presenter will discuss the importance of reflecting the couple’s success in Tango Move 5, while focusing on the new moves they exhibited through the Tango process. Participants will leave this webinar with a stronger understanding of how to effectively use the Tango with couples therapy clients. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training programs.

Objectives:

  1. From an attachment perspective, explain why a successful Tango Move 4 is the goal of EFT
  2. List and describe the four main types of enactments in EFT
