Abstract:
ADHD affects 7.2% of children and 2.5% of adults worldwide (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). Despite the growing emphasis on how to support children with ADHD in daily and educational functioning, there is little attention paid to the collaboration of care between healthcare and educational professionals (Talbott et al., 2020). Collaborative care models provide many benefits, including increased medication compliance (Kolko et al., 2020), improved treatment outcomes (Hernandez at el., 2024; Kolko et al., 2012), and reduced inequities in access to and provision of care for historically marginalized populations (Jackson-Triche et al., 2020). Additionally, professionals involved in the care for people with ADHD are ethically responsible for collaborating as a treatment team to benefit the patient and improve treatment outcomes. However, despite these benefits, there are identified challenges to effective collaborative care for children with ADHD and, even more so, for adults with ADHD (Power et al., 2013), leading to reduce collaborative care (Pelishek & Panzer, 2025). This lack of collaborative care can result in reduced collaboration regarding transition of care from childhood to adulthood with ADHD and can be challenging for adults diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood. This presentation will review the literature on collaborative care models in the treatment of ADHD and discuss potential ways to collaborate care more effectively for patients transitioning to adulthood and for patients who are diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood.
Objectives:
- Describe the benefits, purpose and ethical responsibility of collaborative care in the treatment of clients with ADHD
- Identify components of effective collaborative care for clients with ADHD and discuss how this care can be transitioned to collaborative care for adult clients with ADHD
- Identify and discuss considerations in collaboration and collaborative care for adults with ADHD
