Abstract:

This is an updated version of our Specialty Mental Health Procedures and Action Plans: Eating Disorders, Substance Use, and ADHD course. This is an advanced webinar analyzing variables related to establishing policies, procedures, guidelines, and action plans to address ADHD in athletes. Approximately 7-8% of college and elite athletes have Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD; Han et al., 2019). This prevalence rate may be underestimated as individuals may experience difficulty with access to services to appropriately diagnose and treat ADHD during childhood, especially in Black, Hispanic, and Asian children (Yang et al., 2022). This leads to adults who may not be identified or diagnosed with ADHD, despite experiencing symptoms. Yet, mental health literacy for ADHD tends to be low. Various guidelines and Best Practices indicate that procedures should be developed to address a variety of mental health concerns, which includes ADHD (Torstveit et al., 2023; Wells et al., 2020). However, available data indicates that many organizations do not have thorough procedures in place (Jang et al., 2024; Young et al., 2023) and many could benefit from guidance regarding what to include in their overall Mental Health Plan. Therefore, this course is designed to assist those tasked with drafting, revising, and following mental health policies, procedures, guidelines, and action plans with specific information that they can include regarding ADHD within athletic populations. This webinar is appropriate for athletic trainers, licensed mental health professionals, and mental performance consultants and will be beneficial for any stage of conceptualization, writing, or re-writing of these plans.

Objectives:

  1. Identify trends in the research regarding mental health literacy for ADHD
  2. Identify signs and symptoms of possible ADHD that warrant attention
  3. Recall components to include when writing your policies, procedures, guidelines, and action plans for ADHD
  4. Select strategies for interprofessional collaboration
