Abstract:
This is an introductory level seminar exploring variables related to mental health concerns for athletes. Attendees learn about common mental health concerns and unique ways in which these difficulties tend to manifest in athlete populations. High-risk mental health concerns, such as self-injury and suicide, and how to respond to maximize athlete safety will be discussed. Attendees are given basic information about mental health treatment and learn tips to find mental health professionals to include on their treatment teams per current interdisciplinary guidelines. This workshop is appropriate for athletic trainers, physical therapists, mental performance consultants, and other professionals desiring basic information about mental health in athlete populations. This is an update of our previous Introduction to Athlete Mental Health course.
Objectives:
- (Identification) Differentiate the clinical presentation and diagnostic symptoms of five (5) commonly occurring mental health disorders within competitive athlete populations
- (Crisis Management) Evaluate two (2) high-risk clinical indicators of acute psychological distress in athletes
- (Crisis Management) Identify an immediate, evidence-based crisis response protocol to ensure athlete safety
- (Care Coordination) Develop a strategy to identify, evaluate, and integrate qualified mental health professionals into an athlete’s multidisciplinary treatment team
