Abstract:

Studies indicate an estimated worldwide prevalence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to be 1.6-5% (Popit et al., 2024). Individuals diagnosed with ADHD often meet criteria for additional psychiatric diagnoses (Choi et al., 2022; Mohammedi et al., 2019). In fact, one study found that 80% of adults diagnosed with ADHD also meet criteria for at least one comorbid diagnosis (Seo et al., 2022). Anxiety disorders are commonly co-occurring with ADHD (Fu et al., 2025), and approximately 3.3% of adolescents and adults with ADHD are also diagnosed with social anxiety disorder (SAD; Pehlivanidis et al., 2020). Research on the co-existence of ADHD and SAD demonstrate higher rates of rejection sensitivity (Koyuncu et al., 2017) and challenges in childhood social relationships including stigma, rejection, bullying (Gardner & Gerdes, 2013), and exclusion (Becker, Kneeskern, & Tamm, 2019). Severity of symptoms and impairments may be greater for ADHD inattentive presentation (Koyuncu et al., 2015).

Given that individuals diagnosed with both ADHD and SAD experience greater social impairments (Herizchi & Vasfi, 2021; Jakobsson Støre et al., 2024), it is essential to address these comorbid diagnoses to help reduce symptoms and improve functioning. This presentation will review the current literature regarding the relationship between ADHD and SAD, discuss treatment modalities to address the co-occurring disorders, and outline specific interventions to help adults with ADHD and SAD reduce symptoms and improve function. This is an intermediate-level webinar appropriate for mental health and medical professionals who desire learning more about this topic.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the relationship between ADHD and Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) in adults and how these diagnoses impact relationships
  2. Discuss treatment modalities that can address ADHD and SAD
  3. Identify two interventions to support adults with ADHD and SAD
