Abstract:

In the demanding field of mental health, professionals often find themselves navigating the delicate balance between providing empathic care to others and maintaining their own well-being. This course is designed to equip mental health professionals with the knowledge, skills, and tools necessary to safeguard their own well-being while providing optimal care to their clients. Definitions, differences, and similarities between compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma, secondary trauma, and burnout will be explored. There will be a focus on the development of strategies to build resilience to help mitigate the psychological, emotional, and physical toll this challenging work can have on mental health professionals. Factors at the personal, professional, and organizational levels will also be examined and discussed. Participants will leave this intermediate level course with knowledge and skills necessary to create a fulfilling and sustainable career in the challenging an rewarding field of mental health.

Objectives:

  1. Describe the differences and similarities between compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma, and burnout.
  2. Explain the psychological and physiological impact of trauma and stress.
  3. Identify strategies that can be used to build resilience and treat the effects of work-related trauma and stress.

Presenter: Katie Francis, MSW, LCSW/LICSW

Katie Francis, MSW, LCSW/LICSW, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She completed her Bachelor of Social Work degree at Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2005 and her Master of Social Work Degree at the University of Minnesota in 2009. Ms. Francis has over 18 years of experience in the mental health field. She spent her first 15 years in the field in Community Mental Health in a variety of areas including outpatient therapy, school-based services, day treatment, in-home therapy, homeless services, and crisis services. She has spent the last 3 years working at Assessment and Therapy Associates of Grand Forks providing psychotherapy services to children, adolescents, and adults. Her areas of interest include treating individuals experiencing issues including anxiety, depression, PTSD/trauma, grief/loss, relationship challenges, compassion fatigue, and adjusting to life changes. She has a passion for working with first responders and other helping professionals.
