Abstract:

This is an intermediate level seminar that explores mental health concerns for collegiate student-athletes. The pressure of high performance, cultural variables, and unique stressors in the sport environment may impact well-being of collegiate student-athletes. However, many athletes fear seeking mental health services due to stigma. Sports medicine personnel, including athletic trainers, may be the first point of contact for these concerns but can feel ill-equipped to manage them. Many mental health professionals have little training regarding effective collaboration with sports medicine. Therefore, sports medicine and mental health professionals would benefit from education about collegiate student-athletes' mental health difficulties and interprofessional collaboration. This seminar is appropriate for athletic trainers, physical therapists, sports medicine physicians, psychologists, social workers, and counselors working with secondary school athletes.

Objectives:

  1. List prevalence rates of mental health difficulties in collegiate-student athletes.
  2. Explain three (3) cultural factors that influence mental health in collegiate student-athletes.
  3. List two (2) sport-specific risk factors for mental health difficulties in collegiate student-athletes.
  4. Identify three (3) ways to engage in effective interprofessional collaboration between sports medicine and mental health professionals.
