Abstract:

The 2024 National Strategy for Suicide Prevention is a 10-year plan that aims to reduce suicides in the United States. It calls for health systems to implement a systematic approach to screen, assess, monitor, and intervene with suicide risk, and it specifically offers components of a "Suicide Care Pathway" that include the following: collaborative safety planning, lethal means safety counseling, connecting patients with peer support, and connecting patients with evidence-based care focused on suicide prevention. This presentation will offer moments for us to reflect on our beliefs and fears about suicide and entertain how our beliefs and reactions impact therapeutic alliance. We will also explore data relevant to suicide prevalence rates, risk factors of suicide, and treatment data that demonstrates the effectiveness of certain approaches to prevent suicide. This presentation will explore what makes good therapy, what language we should use to describe elements of suicide risk, discuss the role of screeners, explore a couple methods for suicide risk assessment, and review a evidence-based therapies to prevent suicide.

Objectives:

  1. Identify and self-reflect on beliefs about suicide and suicide prevention for the purpose of considering their community role in preventing suicides
  2. Identify and be poised to implement improvements in your process of screening and assessment of suicide risk, collaborative safety planning, and intervention
  3. Explain evidence-based interventions for suicide prevention and consider a call to become competent in at least one approach
