Abstract:

This is an update of our Designing and Refining Your Athlete Mental Health Screening Procedures course. Mental health best practices indicate that screening procedures should be used to identify and refer student-athletes experiencing mental health concerns (Neal et al., 2015, under review; Rancourt et al., 2020; Tomalsi et al., 2019). Yet, there continues to be wide variation in adoption of mental health screening practices. Sports medicine staff are often responsible for conducting these screenings (Drew et al., 2023), although there is little guidance regarding what to screen for and how to choose screening approaches that are appropriate given organizational resources (Kroshus, 2016; Sudano & Miles, 2017). It is also important to consider the broader mental health culture when conducting athlete mental health screening (NCAA SSI, 2024), which includes attending to mental health literacy across interest holders, which includes athletes that we serve. This is an entry-level webinar that will outline important factors to consider when designing or refining your athlete mental health screening practices. The presenter reviews various guidelines and best practices that guide athlete mental health and guides you through a framework to consider when choosing screening practices that fit within your parameters and meet the needs of athletes that you serve.

Objectives:

  1. List the NCAA Best Practice recommendations for athlete mental health screening.
  2. Recognize factors to consider when you design and implement an athlete mental health screening process.
  3. Identify strategies to promote a culture supporting mental health and disclosure of mental health concerns within athletic spaces
  4. Choose strategies to help you identify inventories that you can use as part of your mental health screening process
