Course Information:

The end of a sport career is one of the most underestimated transitions an athlete can go through. From the outside, it can look straightforward: A season ends, a graduation happens, and they move on. Yet, from the inside, it's often something much larger.

Exiting competitive sport is a complex transition that can result in a wide range of challenging experiences for athletes (Simon & Docherty, 2014), especially because it often occurs during young adulthood. In fact, approximately 20% of athletes experience retirement as a crisis. Athletes who do not plan for what happens after sport are most at-risk for needing professional intervention post-retirement (Park et al., 2013).

Because you care about an athlete in your life, having tools to support them is important. Therefore, this webinar will provide you with skills to support athletes as it relates to their sport ending (i.e., retirement from sport). A variety of strategies and resources will be given, including information about resources specifically designed for athletes: A parent and guardian Toolkit and a program designed to help athletes deal with change (including their exit from competitive sport).
