Toolkit for Parents and Guardians: Helping Your Athlete Cope with Sports Ending

Coming soon (it will be released in approximately mid-May 2026)!

This effort is associated with North Dakota’s State Suicide Prevention Program, funded by the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Behavioral Health Division (BHD).

Our Mission is Simple

Help student-athletes prepare for sport-related changes, including retirement from sport at any level.

WHY THIS TOOLKIT MATTERS

Sport has so many changes, and honestly, that's part of what makes sports fun! Yet, we don't always do a good job of helping athletes at all levels prepare for those changes. Psychological science tells us that athletes that develop a plan to deal with sport-related changes tend to perform better, enjoy their sport more, and be more connected with those around them. Yet, when we looked for structured programming to teach athletes the necessary skills, unfortunately, we weren’t able to find it.

That’s why Dr. Erin Haugen created Ready, Set, Next (RSN), a program designed to help athletes and those that support them deal with sport-related change, and our data suggest our program works!

This toolkit is a part of that program. Why?

Parents, guardians, and other trusted adults play an important role in the lives of athletes, and we want to make sure you have support and resources, too!
