Abstract:
The health and well-being of young adults is suffering, which is reflected in data related to suicide. Suicide rates for people ages 10-24 increased from 2007 to 2021, which includes an increase of 63% for people ages 20-24 from 2001 through 2021 (Curtin & Garnett, 2023). Nationally, rates of suicide are higher in rural than urban counties (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). Like the general population, suicide is one of the leading causes of death among NCAA athletes, and data suggest that student-athlete deaths by suicide doubled within the past 10 years (Whelan et al., 2024). Because those within the sport ecosystem play a critical role in the health and well-being of student-athletes (Eckenrod et al., 2025; Steins et al., 2024; Strouphauer et al., 2025), it is essential that athletics personnel are trained to identify not only risk factors and warning signs of suicide but work to also build protective factors and safety nets for student-athletes. This also includes attention to postvention interventions, which are mechanisms of suicide prevention occurring after a mental health emergency. This course is an essential-level course focused on identifying risk and protective factors for suicide as well as practicing critical skills related to discussing suicide with student-athletes. We will also discuss how to integrate learned skills and concepts into your MHEAP and pay particular attention to helping you identify factors that you can integrate into your own postvention plan. This course is appropriate for athletic trainers, mental health professionals, and mental performance consultants.
Objectives:
- Describe how to build protective factors and safety nets for student-athletes as it relates to well-being and suicide
- Identify risk factors and warning signs for suicide in student-athletes
- Utilize critical skills to practice conversation around suicide with student-athletes
- Analyze factors to include in your organization's postvention plan to enact after a mental health emergency
